Being a parent, is like riding a roller coaster ride. You never know which side your life is going to fall in the next second. Up, down, Left cut, Right cut, turn around, somersaults or even God doesn’t know the way because driving this ride is your child, with naughtiest ideas in his/her mind .
My sister Rinku was blessed with a baby girl Tanishi (Tanu) 4 years back and that was the only time when she smiled and the infant cried. Since then till time, it’s been always the other way around. Interestingly her in – laws and even her own family with 30 years old rooted relations instantly switched their loyalty. So the current situation is that, even when Tanu sniffs, everyone gets tensed. When Rinku complains about Tanu’s tantrums, everyone just turns their ear. So anyone who listens to their conservation without seeing their face may think Tanu is the grandma of the home and Rinku is a disobedient grandchild who is only grown up in age and not by her mind.
“Mumma, I am trying to tell you since long, Clothes are kept this way not that. Listen to me, Learn from me, I had learned it from my teacher today only. I was praised for folding the handkerchief myself.”
“Rinku mama, I told you I will finish my meal after TV why do you keep putting the spoon back in my mouth again and again?”
“Mama, Its already bed time, You know Dr. Uncle always says we have to be in the bed by 10, but you always keep watching TV beyond 10:30, Tell me, why?? “
Being the rock star of her home, Tanu loves to play football, volleyball, ping pong and even invent few new games to play with her mama’s Cellphone. So, Blessing in disguise for Rinku is, she gets a reason to buy new phone after 6-8 months. And now she has 2-3 old phones lying around the house and the 4th one just got crushed by her tricycle with a sound of “Krrrrrrr”.
As Rinku decided to buy another phone and tapped happily on next generation, ultra-slim dual camera android phone, my brother in law dropped the bomb.
“ Rinku , I know that Tanu creates lot of trouble for you and she is the one who crashed the phone but I want you to act responsibly. I want you to get all old smartphones repaired and try if any one of them can work. I am using same phone for last 4 years and you are about to buy 5th phone in a span of 4years. ACT responsibly”.
The silence after a bomb drop is more painful. Although she went silent for few minutes, but busted her anger in another way “ OK , I will surely get a new phone and I don’t need ur credit card for this. I will get all the phones repaired and sell them to fund my new phone. And YES, order some food for next few days from wherever you want, as I will be busy in other works, viz repairing and closing the deal.”
So shots had been fired, promises has been made but how to keep them is the real situation for now.
“Brother, I need your help ASAP”. She posted a message on Whatsapp to me in Delhi. ” Yes, Tell me what happened? Tanu is all right na? ” ” For God’s sake, there is world beyond your niece, Yes she is ok but I need your help. ” ” Ok , Tell me,” ” I am sending across my 4 old phones , get them repaired from Nehru place and sell them in Gaffar Market and order me a new phone.”
” Sis , I don’t have time for doing this repair and selling thing , but yes I can order you the phone .”
“No, I have made a promise to Aakash that I will buy a new phone after I get rid of all of past junk, thus acting responsibly.”
“Ok, Send them across, I will get them repaired and the selling part, you can take care on your own. Just sell them to any of your kitty friend or Mom’s circle at any price and I will pay for the difference”.
Fast Forward 2 weeks. Rinku is trying to sell her semi-repaired phone within her friend circle. Her target price was new phone price divided by four, simple maths. As she started showing her intent to sell phone to her friends, the nightmare began. Most of them were holding on such inventories for long and have been unsuccessfully trying to do so from years. Every phone had a story to tell and bruises like warriors to show. Some had been dropped from the roof, some were thrown in anger, some were tapped and broken like eggs in curiosity on what lies inside them and few even got flushed by kids in an attempt to see the phone circling around in the pot.
In short, it was a marketplace which only had sellers with stories but no buyer for them. When the wait started to move from days to weeks to months, she finally decided to change her approach. She offered all 4 phone to family members and forced them to buy as souvenir of childhood memories of Tanu. This selling process involved lot of drama, tears, false promises and lengthy discussions. But as of now, Mom’s are always the best salesperson in the world as they daily handle the toughest customer “kid” and still emerge as winners.
So from the day the 4th phone got crushed till today which was almost 50 days, the curtain over the phone drama was finally closed. All 4 phone got sold and she happily bought the new phone and even made my brother in law say “Sorry”, “ you are the best” ,“ I was wrong “.
Even while I also ended buying one of her phone, which I thought was very small price to see the glomming smile on her face.
