Increasing use of Solar power in Delhi

To combat climate change, reduce  air pollution, and enhance energy security Every Country in Planet is talking about turning away from fossil fuels and more to Renewable energy sources . Among the option of Solar is the one which is predominately getting noticed due to its application .

Delhi is blessed with almost 300 sunny days and the rooftop space  available for solar panels is estimated to be 31 km2 , giving Delhi a solar energy potential of 2.5 GW (annually approx. 3,500 million kWh).

Some of the Major Places in Delhi which have already adopted solar rooftop system are :

  • Lotus Temple
  • Moolchand Hospital
  • Major Delhi Metro Stations ( almost 30 of them )
  • Many Delhi Public School Buildings
  • Maruti Suzuki Plant in Manesar
  • Medanta Hospital
  • IIT Delhi .
  • Major Collages and Hospitals and Hotel Chain

List of benefits of going solar  :

  • Reduction in Pollution .
  • Reduction in Cooling Requirements as heat is absorbed by the solar panel installed on roof .
  • Earning Carbon Credits.
  • Reduction in Peak Demand Load Reducing Overall Electricity Bill
  • Under net metering , excess power produced can be sold back to grid earning money for consumers .
  • Less dependency on Grid power and feasible solution for areas with deep power cuts .
  • For Industrial Consumers , Solar replace costly diesel power requirements .
  • Being part of Responsible tourism .
  • & for GOOD karma off course .

Given Delhi’s land-locked position, the high cost and paucity of barren land within its borders,  and low potential for wind or hydro power, Delhi is focusing on rooftop solar as its primary  source of renewable energy.

With current tariff power touching almost INR 6 for Residential and INR 10 + For commercial consumption , when solar power has already touched INR 3-4 / unit . It definitely make sense for everyone with a roof space to shift to generate their own power . Ideally 1 KW of Solar System Require 100 Sqft / 12 Sqmt of Shadow free space and investment of around INR 45-50,000 / KWh system . Mainly it consists of Solar Panels , Panel Structure , Inverter , Cable and Metering Equipment . 1 KW of system generate approx 1500 unit / year and these can bee designed / customized based on individual load requirements. Delhi , itself has approx 100 + installer who can provide turnkey design , installation services.

In 2016, the peak power demand in Delhi was almost 6 GW (annually approx. 28,000 million  kWh). Power demand can vary considerably across a 24-hour window, especially in summer and owing to the increasing use of air conditioning. In general, energy utilities  pay  more to meet short-term demand surges, raising the average cost of power. Delhi’s peak  demand curve broadly matches the generation curve of solar systems, which can therefore help reduce peak demands. Moreover, energy produced by rooftop solar systems is mostly  consumed at, or near, the point of generation, minimizing transmission and distribution losses.
In short, rooftop solar systems offer sustainable energy, environmental benefits, low gestation  period, low transmission and distribution losses, reduced need for distribution infrastructure,  and peak load offset that reduces costs for the DISCOMs and ultimately for the consumers.

The Government of India (GoI) has set a target of 100 GW of solar energy generation in India by 2022, of which 40 GW is from rooftops. Delhi is well positioned to lead India’s rooftop solar revolution and has consequently established solar generation targets of 1 GW by 2020 (4.2% of  energy consumed) and 2.0 GW by 2025 (6.6% of energy consumed). To help achieve these  targets, this document seeks to outline a robust and pragmatic solar energy policy for Delhi.

Alongside, govt & various private bodies are actively working on  consumer awareness of solar energy, promote capacity building,  and generate healthy competition among solar developers, so that solar power is adopted on a mass scale and Delhi becomes the premier solar city in India .

Being the Capital city of India , Everyone looks towards Delhi to lead the race ad set example for Tier-1 City and other to follow . And this initiative will surely help us in creating a SUPER LIFE #CelebratingSuper  for its citizen  and green air / clean air is the need for the hour .
